The legal representatives of attorney Odila Castillo Bonilla released a strong declaration on October 1st, unequivocally denying the claims that have been circulated by several newspapers in Panama.
The defense described these articles as vicious assaults, motivated by personal financial agendas and aimed at tarnishing Castillo’s professional credibility and personal honor.
Castillo’s defense contends absence of basis and infringement of rights
Carlos Carrillo, part of Castillo’s legal team, remarked that the allegations lack any basis and are intended to hinder the professional paths of both the young attorney and her associate. He stressed that these attacks are driven by hidden financial motives looking to gain from Castillo’s tarnishing.
The defense pointed out that this is not the initial occurrence of media intimidation faced by the attorney. They reminisced about a comparable event in 2021, when a Panamanian outlet published false information about a supposed arrest of Castillo, which was later retracted.
Partial truths and violation of confidentiality
The legal team stated that both the recent claims and those from 2021 are based on “partial truths,” distorted to harm the professional standing of attorney Odila Castillo. Additionally, they claimed that the shared information violates confidentiality norms, as some of the investigation stems from a previously resolved family issue.
Confidential information, such as migration records and tax filings, was also made public—data that, as per the defense, was acquired through illegal means.
Unauthorized surveillance and continuing legal proceedings
The defense revealed that Castillo has experienced GPS monitoring, representing a blatant invasion of her privacy and a type of illegal surveillance. Carrillo claimed that his client’s basic rights, as protected by the Panamanian Constitution and relevant legislation, have been violated.
He declared that all required legal measures will be taken to establish accountability for the harm suffered and the damage that might be attempted. The legal team remains steadfast in their dedication to defending Castillo and ensuring that those behind this defamation effort face justice.
